In an earlier blogpost we answered the question, "Can Brown Rice Make Me Fat?" Today we are going to discuss a strategy we can apply to lose weight with the aid of course of healthy brown rice.
As we said in the previous post, brown rice can be an effective tool in helping us lose weight but the majority of the effort still has to come from us in that we still need to successfully control the amount of food that we eat. So how do we lose weight?
We always try to illustrate weight loss with this formula:
Weight Gain/Loss = Calories IN - Calories OUT
Calories IN is simply the amount of calories we put inside our bodies based on the food we eat. Fiber rich and calorie light foods such as vegetables and fruits are the best for weight loss while calorie heavy foods with low fiber content like sugary sweets are best avoided when aiming for weight loss.
Calories OUT in simple terms is a combination of how much our body burns based on our genes and how much exercise we do. It will be different per person but generally this is how the formula looks like:
Weight Gain/Loss = Calories IN - (Genes + Exercise)
The only thing we can control here is Calories IN and the amount of calories burned from exercise and physical activity. Genes can’t be modified yet to increase the amount of calories we burn (but wouldn’t that be wonderful?) so we can consider that as a constant for now.
It now looks like weight loss is just a simple math problem: When we burn more calories from exercise and physical activity than we eat then the answer to our formula is a negative number which means we are losing weight! The opposite of course is true: if we eat more calories than we burn, then those excess calories are stored as fat and we gain weight.
In reality, weight loss can really be a challenge. You're not just trying to lose weight, you’re also changing a lot of habits that you’ve already had for many years and that takes a lot of work. If you’re one of those people and you’ve read this far, then congratulations! You’ve put in some work. Give yourself a pat on the back and don’t give up. Try to remember the weight loss formula above and see how that applies in your daily life and think about what you can change to turn the answer to a negative whether it be lowering the amount of calories you take in or increasing the calories that you burn off.
